Part 6. What is our Mission?
Matthew 28:16-20
“MISSION COMES FROM THE GREAT COMISSION”
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Matthew 28:16-20
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20
OUR MISSION: WE EXIST TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF CHRIST.
What is a disciple of Christ?
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. Matthew 28:16-17
“Follow Me and I Will make you fishers of men” Matthew 4:19
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26
“Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:27
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33
A “disciple of Christ” is someone who has been called first to know Christ, then to follow him, and then to make disciples of all nations.
We are to follow him, through thick and through thin, knowing that he is there and that he will reward us in his time; after all, he is the Master.
But discipleship not only involves being with him, being like him, and following him, it also means that we make it our goal to disciple others.
The Great Commission is not just another good idea—though it is that—it is the church’s marching order. As far as I know, he never communicated another plan.
How can we make disciples?
1. Reach (People) (Matthew 28:19; Mark 6:7; Acts 1:8)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Matthew 28:19-20
“And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.” Mark 6:7
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8
2. Teach (Matthew 28:20; Colossians 1:28)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
“Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.” Colossians 1:28
3. Obey (Matthew 28:20; Romans 12:2)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
